The continuing education classes are taught by experienced professionals with years of industrial, chemical, research, and safety knowledge. We can provide structured training aimed at specific objectives. Onsite courses prove convenient to meet your training needs efficiently as the instructor travels to you facility thus eliminating travel time and costs for the facility employees.

Current Available Courses

NORM Awareness Class
2 hour class

NORM awareness training is a 2-hour class that covers the basics on working in a NORM environment.

This class is designed to equip employees who are working in and around possible NORM contaminated environments with knowledge of what NORM is and make them aware of its Safety Hazard. Examples of people who would benefit from this training are: environmental professionals, safety and health managers, and those preforming maintenance on various job sites. The class includes an introduction to radiation, the health effects and risks of working with NORM. It also embraces information on basic rules and regulations, safety procedures and measurement techniques. The class is typically held at the client’s facility. Arrangements can also be made to teach the class at one of ESAC’s locations or via remote learning. The minimum students for this class are 4 with a maximum of 10.

NORM Worker
4 hour class

The NORM worker is a 4-hour class offered to benefit workers who are in contact with NORM on a job site. The class includes PPE (personal protective equipment), worker safety, emergency preparedness, basic chemistry, introduction to radiation, radiation detection instruments, and ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle. The coursework and curriculum are specifically designed to prepare employees for work on job site that has increased levels of radiation. The training is required for any employee that performs work on a location where NORM is present including routine maintenance procedures. The certification is valid for one year. This course can be taught at one of ESAC’s training locations, onsite at the client’s facility or via remote learning. There is a minimum of 4 students for the class with a maximum of 10.

NORM Transportation
8 hour class

NORM Transportation is an 8-hour class on how to properly transport NORM material. The class encompasses the DOT class 7 (radioactive material) rules and regulations. The class includes the following topics: introduction to transportation, DOT NORM exempt concentration rules, types of packaging, limited quantity shipment, low specific activity shipment, surface contaminated object shipment and shipping of samples. The course also encompasses basic radiation safety principles including ALRARA, time distance and shielding and the proper personal protective equipment needed when shipping NORM. The certification is valid for one year and the course is offered at one of ESAC’s training locations, at the clients’ facility or by remote learning. There is a minimum of 4 students with a maximum of 10

NORM Health and Safety Practices 

96 hour class

The class includes introduction to radiation, definitions and characterization of NORM, geological information of oil and gas production, basic chemistry, radioactive decay, radiation units of measurement, radiation calculations and dose limits, worker safety, survey methods, how to detect gamma rays, ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle, health effects, waste and disposal, NORM regulations, worker protection guidelines for handling NORM and transportation.

The class can be taught at one of ESAC’s training locations, at the client’s facility or via remote learning. There is a minimum of 4 students with a maximum of 10.

NORM Surveyor 
8 hour class

The NORM Surveyor course is an 8-hour class which is the required training for any employee who performs NORM surveys. The class includes PPE (personal protective equipment) for NORM jobsite, worker safety, emergency preparedness, basic chemistry, ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle, introduction to radiation, units of measurement, jobsite safety, dose limits, waste and disposal, radiation sources and NORM regulations. The class also focuses on proper handling and usage of NORM detection equipment including the Geiger-Muller counter and Scintillation detector. Each attendee in the course will receive hands on use of the survey equipment to ensure that they are comfortable reading the instrument when performing surveys. It also concentrates on how to draw a proper survey map. The certification is valid for one year. The course can be taught at an ESAC location or onsite at the client’s facility. There is a minimum of 4 students for the class with a maximum of 10.

A Student who successfully passes the exam, will be a certified NORM Surveyors.

RSO Refresher
8 hour class

The RSO Refresher course is an 8-hour that enables a trained RSO to renew their training for an additional 3 years. The course includes a review of everything taught during the full week RSO class. It revisits the introduction to radiation, definitions and characterization of NORM, geological information of oil and gas production, basic chemistry, radioactive decay, radiation units of measurement, radiation calculations and dose limits, worker safety, survey methods, how to detect gamma rays, ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle, health effects, waste and disposal, NORM regulations, worker protection guidelines for handling NORM and transportation. The RSO refresher is valid for three years.
The class can be taught at one of ESAC’s training locations, at the client’s facility or via remote learning. There is a minimum of 4 students with a maximum of 10.

RSO Radiation Safety Officer
40 hour class

Held at the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. Hands on training with NORM surveyor equipment including gamma-ray spectrometer. Includes a tour of the reactor and training facilities. Training valid for 3 years with one day refresher course offered. Prepares an employee to manage a NORM jobsite. Includes information on state regulations, and reduction practices for radiation exposure to the employee and the general public.

The class can be taught at one of ESAC’s training locations, at the client’s facility or via remote learning. There is a minimum of 4 students with a maximum of 10.
